A traditional passive RFID tag has no battery and has to wait around to be read by an RFID reader such as a scanner. Active RFID tags have batteries built into them and offer significant advantages when compared against passive RFID systems:

• Read range of almost a mile for outdoor applications

• Tag can be read in the most challenging environments

• Tags also have on-board sensors such as temperature monitoring

• Active RFID allows for a minimal infrastructure setup
